Yeah, it’s more of a seat-of-the-pants kind of thing. If you friend me and tell me why you've friended me and how you discovered me I will likely friend you back thereby opening up a portion of my fandom-friendly entries. My journal is about 2% viewable to the public 75% viewable to the fandom-flist, 98% viewable to the family-flist, and then another 2% there just for little 'ol me and no one else. If you friend me, will I read your journal? Yes and no. Life gets busy and I can't keep up with it all the time. Also, I tend not to be able to check LJ on the weekends so I'm less likely to read those posts -- especially since my flist seems very prolific on the weekends! Backtracking to catch-up has become near impossible, but I still sometimes try. If you comment on my entries regularly, I’m more likely to remember you exist and read yours. [2003] To be completely honest my deepest gut still has serious misgivings about the very concept of personal blogs. OTOH, I decided to commit to this for a number of reasons including (1) an attempt to better understand or dare I say "clue into" the digital generation culture as well as (2) an attempt to keep up with distant friends and family on the day-to-day realities that become hard to understand when the physicality of daily communication is difficult. And, now that I've done this for a while, I've actually learned quite a bit....at least more than I expected. The most surprising thing for me is that most of my flist are virtual friends whom I've never met in person. That's a fun development for this thirty-something mom so NOT of the digital age in other aspects of my life. ;-) The unique mixture of family, personal interests and work that derives my daily life includes my partner since 1994 (KB) and our three kids (M 11/99,L & J 5/02). I try to spend as much as possible of the scarce "free time" in my life with the family just playing and having fun. When I'm not with them, I am usually working, reading/watching SF, LARPing, writing and sharing intellectually stimulating conversation with friends and family. For those that know me outside of LJ, this journal will likely surprise you. Work and family dominates most of my RL. With LJ, I have ventured to create a "me" space that is as devoid of "work-related me" as possible. It is not that I do not love my professional life or chosen career path - it is simply that this space is not about that. Most my non-work "me" is "mommy-me" and threads itself through every available fissure of my life. This LJ is my chance to be just me and attempt to discover and document interests that I just don't have the opportunity to express in the rest of my life. Therefore, be warned that most of posts provide a very warped view of my actual life. In fact, this is the place I’ve elected let my inner fangirl *squee* and run free like a wild woman. LJ has become a cathartic avenue for expressing my fandom more than anything else. (Fangirl go *squee*) While this is good, it is also a very skewed view of me. My fandom lives full bloom here but in my daily life there is very very very little room for it. Which is likely why it has taken root in the journal. At least I finally "get" what the Blog fuss is all about now. And, its fun to share in the fandom and not always be the serious cynical side of me. ;-) [2005 Communities Update] I recently helped launch bsg_women with ehab_it.*squee* Finally, because there can never be enough strong female characters, Osiris is one who should be nominated to the category of "favorite minor recurring female characters" in an SF series. Others that come to mind are Lt. Hailey (SG1), Elizabeth McKay (SGC), Lieutenant Laura Cadman (SGA), D'Anna Bears (BSG). Other suggestions?
