********* My gorgeous sparkly Lee/Kara FO image was made by the creative genius of makingmischief *********This journal is now minions-only. *cough* Did I say minions? No. No. No. That's not what I meant at all. I meant Friends. Friends-Only. Yep, that was it. F-R-I-E-N-D-S. Friends-Only. ( Read more... )* PS: My fanfic entries are public so if that's what you want to read, no friending is needed. Also, I do know the date is wrong for this post - its on purpose. I haven't figured out how to make a banner appear first on the page without it. *

OMG...How cool does this group sound? Was fiddling around joining groups on LinkedIn and KB says, "You are such a geek." So, on a whim I entered "geek" criteria "Groups" and voila -- Girl Geek Dinners shows up several times on LinkedIn. Needless to say, I just had to google it. http://girlgeekdinners.com/

Elfquest, the movie...it is finally actually happening after years and years of lobbying and failed attempts by Wendy and Richard Pini. Yay!!!!! http://www.reuters.com/article/filmNews/idUSN0932864920080709Don't know the series? Its totally worth reading the original series from beginning to end...and, guess what -- its mostly online!!!! That's right. EQ was one of the first publishers to decide to put some of its original art in brilliant four color on-line. Nothing beets my original signed copy collections, but this is a great way to read up on one of the first successful independent graphic novels published. Visit the FREE EQ On-line Gallery - 20+ years of art now on-line"As an aside, I'm also partial to the Short Story Collection Books: The Blood of Ten Chiefs. On a final note...fingers crossed that WB will actually do EQ justice. And...what will they decide to rate it. This is one series that could easily be translated to film anywhere along the spectrum of G to NC-17. My gut is they will go with PG. However, I would not be surprised if they pushed it to PG-13.

I was thinking about the cost of a penny while driving into work today and couldn't help but wonder -- why don't they just convert to more paper? Make a 1/2 dollar and 1/4 dollar paper bill that is smaller in size than the regular dollar? I'm just asking....

All -- I've had computer hell for the past two weeks....its been horrid. ( hear me rant.... )Anyhow, if you've emailed me anything important over the last several days....please resend. See, I've been working off of loaners and webmail and am seriously behind. About 300+ on gmail. I was focused on keeping abreast of work. Sorry! zeph

If anyone has time to play with a photo of M from his first viola concert -- I'd appreciate any offers of help and will email it to you. BEcause of where he was sitting I was only able to get one decent pic and even that is both grainy and he has white eyes -- not red.
The basic red-eye removed won't help because of the resolution caused by the distance and lighting of a concert in a gymnasium. I don't mind the resolution so much but I'd love to get rid of the ghostly eyes.
Anyhow, if anyone is fabulous at photoshop and willing to lend a hand, I'd appreciate it but don't feel obligated!

OK...no big surprise. Still, I had to share how my kids have so been suckered by the world of mass marketing pop culture and capitalism... Lego Promo Eyes New 'Indiana Jones'http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90603058Its a news story about the Lego/LucasFilm contract. I just have to say...They soooo snagged my kids. They are now ages 7 and 9 and are gaga for legos. Its all about what lego sets they own, when the next catalog is coming, how much allowance they've saved, etc. Needless to say, they've already been in love with Star Wars Legos. They had NO CLUE who Indiana Jones was, but when the April Lego catalog came with the Indy stuff they were all about, "Mom, this is cool!" Before I knew it, I was having to describe the various purposes of a bullwhip and why Indy would have one. Also, they wanted to know if I would let them see the movies. Amazingly effective marketing tool. In fact, we bought the Raiders DVD to rewatch for the sole purpose of trying to recall if it would be OK for kids. There's rougher language (cursing et al) than I would like and I think moments are scarier than I'd like for their age as well (aka the Ark scene at the end). I think they are too young to get the Nazi implications and the clear government conspiracy as well, but overall its not to old for my eldest. I'm still undecided. OTOH, it is fun to get bak in the Indiana spirit. Not certain when I'll catch the new flick since I will need to find time without the kids in order to decide on that one. ps -- would you believe I forgot to use my indy icon! Just had to come back and edit. sheesh....

Web places I went, articles I read today...just felt like sharing.IEEE SSIT http://www.ieeessit.org/Interesting group..was checking something out for a project. Brazil as new Tech VC location http://alwayson.goingon.com/permalink/post/27216Article sent to me by a co-worked who is currently at a meeting in Hong Kong with one of our volunteers who is heavily involved in Tech in Brazil. Plaxo http://www.plaxo.com/Been a member for a while -- trying to figure out the value of Plaxo Pulse after getting my "updates this week email" LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/ -- because I used to get a "updates this week" email from LinkedIn similar to the Plaxo Pulse one and now I don't....why? Gave up after 5 minutes because I had work to do. Viola on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ViolaOK, not actually for work really, but visited during the work day. My eldest had his first orchestra concert last night. I was pleasantly surprised! The 3rd grade kids did well, but the 4th and 5th grade orchestras really surprised me. I'll probably write more and post pictures soon in a flist-only post about it -- he was so cute in his shirt and tie! Meanwhile, one of my work buddies wanted to know the real difference between the violin and the viola. I began to describe it and cut myself off with a, "Let's just wiki it..." Where I checked the news today... http://www.npr.org/ http://www.wnyc.org/ http://www.wnbc.org

I received then lost this link...so I'm putting it here for the future.. Dasja Dolan Photographs. Dasja is the wife of a first cousin once removed who lives in Portland, Oregon (USA). I've only ever met Dasja once at the Bat Mitzvah of another cousine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) last July. Lovely women. She is responsible for the one of the few decent photos of me that I've managed to obtain. For those on AIM or LinkedIn with me -- that photo/icon is thanks to her. http://dasjadolan.smugmug.com/gallery/4177478_XPe5G#244087569

While I have no money to buy any of this right now, I did bookmark it because I think its nifty, pretty and fun. Caffeine Made with Molecules has beautiful pieces inspired by biochemistry. Nifty!

Woo Hoo!!! Eight days of meetings completed and I actually do have an evening free in Vancouver. I've already done the major sights on snippets of free time that I managed to catch -- - sat on the sea wall - wandered the waterfront - visited the vag - ambled through the aquarium - gorged on food in gastown - robbed blind on the price of gifts for the kids on Robson So....I have one evening left. Ignoring the fact that I'm exhausted and should probably go work out, should I: (1) Order room service and slowly pack so I'm not stressed in the morning (car service pick-up at 10:00 am) (2) Go to the bookstore and check out Canadian authors....adding fun but weight to the suitcase (3) Shop more (4) Eat out again (5) see a 6:30 showing of HP5 (or just wait till I get back home with the kids) (6) something else Psst... mhalachaiswords or Raj, if you are reading this and have a better local idea, please call or text me! Thanks all!

Another snippet highlight from yesterday - I spent part of the conference cocktail party chatting merrily with the guy whose day job is to drive one of the Mars Land Rover for JPL. He is here because he is the volunteer chair for the Robotics & Automation Societies Conference and is learning how to run a better conference.
Yes, I am such a geek because it seriously was a highlight.

Heyla all -- anyone on my lists in the Detroit/Lansing Area of Michigan?
I'll be there at the end of the month with a bit of free time...
Morning/afternoon: July 30 Afternoon/Evening: August 2

So I've been on seriously limited (non-work time) internet access for almost a month now but that has all turned around as of yesterday now that our new computer arrived! Woo Hoo!! On that note, in my email inbox I found this very cool deal ONLY THIS WEEK from Barnes&Noble! Buy one TV DVD Box set and get one free. How's that for a nifty cool after holiday sale? Seriously, the SciFi sets that are part of the deal include Firefly, Buffy, Stargate, Supernatural, Alias, Charmed and others. Unfortunately BSG is not included. Not that I can really afford any of it post holidays...but still its worth considering using the evil credit card. Anyhow, I hope you can take advantage...not to mention the buying power of DVD-on-TV box sets. I am SUCH a geek.

LJ....I'm so frakking far behind and its all RL related. I put of all fanfic for NaNoWriMo and failed utterly at that as well. *sigh* OTOH, I did get two chapters done on my novel so may be that's enough to get me started. Bottom line is that I've had so little computer play time, I'm really behind in flist reading. I mean REALLY behind. So it I missed something really important -- I'm so sorry! I have LOADS of family photos to post at some point. If you don't want to wait and want some smiling kids to cheer up your day, email me and I'll send you the link to the snapfish albums. Now, thanks to a post from cousin avicado a while back, I've snagged the ( 50 most significant SciFi books...supposedly. )

OK, life has been an uphill battle of craziness for the last week. Several...many fun family moments over Max's birthday weekend, but very little "me" time and even less computer time. OTOH, I did have about 6 loads of backed up laundry to deal with so I caught up on BSG whilst folding, sorting and putting away clothes for my family o'five. While I am overall very happy to have new episodes and overall really enjoying season three, I'm seriously dissapointed in Friday's "Torn" overall. ( cut for spoilers )

I was having this conversation with someone about the ridiculousness of the McDonalds Monopoly game and how its silly for me to even save these things. After all, the only time we ever eat at McDonalds is Sat or Sun morning because we met up with all the cousins etc for breakfast. Years ago before there were so many kids, we would meet at Perkins, ihop or other related breakfast establishment. However, with 14 total people - 7 of whom are kids its just to nuts and to expensive. Now we get together at McDonalds and its just easier. Its actually fairly ironic because I never eat anything, the kids all share one breakfast big meal with a side of pancakes and K usually gets some kind of sandwich on a biscuit so its certainly cheap in the realm of eating out with the extended family. Anyhow, back to Monopoly. The kids love hash browns...the only breakfast food that seems to have the pieces so I do have several in a ziploc baggy. It seems silly because I know I won't win. OTOH, I can't bring myself to throw them out....just in case. Its just a big scam seeing as they distribute the matches across the country so it is practically impossible to get a big win. For example, I have three sets of the same two rairoads and two Indiana Avenues. That's fairly typical. I also have a Park Place. My bet is that Park Place is distributed to NY Metro and the one or two Broadway matches are distributed to say...Montana. ( Anyhow, here's what I have (excluding the many multiples)... )

As the 50K word launch of NaNoWriMo approached, I'm hoping all of you have seen the six word stories by Wired Magazine. houses7177 introduced me to them and reading hers and those written by other LJers has been fun. In the first reading, I missed that my favorite author wrote one. It's classic card, but it definately makes me think of BSG. ;-) The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly. - Orson Scott Card I learned today that RDA added one. And, I can't help but wonder if he recently watched Angel season 5 on DVD.... “Cellar?” “Gate to, uh … hell, actually.” - Ronald D. Moore Anyhow, if you haven't made the trek over to Wired Magazine. "Deja vu. It's worth the trip." - zephyr RS ;-)
